This week I had the chance to really dive deep into the super metric powerhouse and continue learning the marketing importance of this valuable tool. The goal when using this application is to create powerful reports in a streamlined approach that make life not as hard as you think. Excel stands out when it comes down to features, formulas, and add-ins.

Let’s Talk About Dimensions 

The proper way to view data should be at smaller parts at a time. Through a more narrow lens you can provide valuable insight into what is happening inside your business and what measures you would implement after careful evaluation. When you are navigating through your data it is important to look at all possible viewpoints, outcomes, and measures to achieve a thorough understand of your research. This is especially true when comparing analysis of your business performance over time or in a specific time period. This would be a dimension.

Dimensions are ways of slicing information which is stated in measures such as sales and revenue. When referring to analytics on a webpage for example, a visitors location, page view count, and where they were prior to your landing page are forms of dimensions. Remember, dimensions are a set of attributes that allow us to slice and dice information stored in measures.

Attributes in a Nutshell 

They are a way of describing the value of a dimension by describing characteristics of the dimension. Let’s use my field of aesthetic medicine to help with filtering examples for your further understanding.

  • A dimension titled “Face” typically has attributes such as Eyes, Lips, Nose, Cheeks.
  • A dimension titled “Allergan Aesthetics” would have BOTOX® and Juvéderm® as registered trademarks of Allergan in an excel column.
  • A dimension like “Regions” would typically have Central, Eastern, Western, Southern as attributes.


Hierarchies are arraignments of data structured by dimensions and attributes presented at various levels. Here you can see for example in a comical view the necessities of human needs in this structured form. It provides a ranking of importance and order to your data and finalizations of your research are easier to visualize and grasp.
